Todd J. Miehlke of Lansing, Mich., will receive the 2004 Fred W. Arnold Public Relations Award from the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) during the association's Annual Convention & Exposition from Feb. 27-29, at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Mich.

The Fred W. Arnold Award recognizes an MPA member who has shown outstanding achievement and dedication to the pharmacy profession through community education with an emphasis on public speaking and/or presentations.

Miehlke, a 12-year MPA member, earned his Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from Ferris State University (FSU) in 1988. He is currently Team Leader and Lansing Relief Pharmacist Coordinator for Meijer, Inc., an independent consultant pharmacist providing mental health services and an adjunct instructor of clinical pharmacy at FSU. During National Pharmacy Week, he helped organize blood pressure and flu clinics at his pharmacy.

Miehlke has been an active member of the Capital Area Pharmacists Association (CAPA) since 1992. He served on CAPA's Executive Board for the past 10 years and was treasurer for four. He is co-chair of CAPA's Social, National Pharmacy Week and Poison Prevention Week Committees. Through these committees, Miehlke has helped to organize several promotional campaigns to increase the visibility of the profession within the Lansing community, including an air banner encouraging people to talk to their pharmacist at the MSU vs. U of M football game, and with TV, radio and newspaper promotions and billboards advertising National Pharmacy Week. Miehlke has spoken with and distributed literature to pre-school and elementary school students, educating them on poison prevention strategies, and participated in a pharmacy educational program at Cristo Rey church in Lansing.

The MPA, serving over 3,500 pharmacy professionals, strives to be a leader in professional and scientific advancement by following its mission of encouraging and supporting its members as the professionals responsible for the delivery of patient-oriented pharmaceutical care.
