William Haithco
will receive the 2003 Pharmacist of the Year Award at the Michigan Pharmacists
Association's (MPA) Annual Convention & Exposition Feb. 21-23 in Dearborn,
Mich. This award is Michigan's highest honor in the pharmacy profession.
The MPA Pharmacist of the Year Award is given to a pharmacist who demonstrates
professional excellence and exemplary service to the profession in advancing
public health at either the state or local level and displays all the traits
and characteristics of someone with a true commitment to advancing the pharmaceutical
profession and public health.
Haithco owned a pharmacy in Saginaw, Mich., for 14 years before working for
17 years at the former Saginaw General Hospital. Haithco served on more than
70 boards and organizations throughout Michigan, and served as a Saginaw County
Commissioner. He was a founding member of the Saginaw County Parks and Recreation
Committee, serving as its chairman for 28 years, and can be recognized as the
namesake to Saginaw's Haithco Park.
Haithco has been a mentor to pharmacy students by serving on the Pharmacy Alumni
Board of Governors at the University of Michigan. He was also the Vice President
of the Michigan State University College of Natural Science Board of Directors,
and a founding member of Pharmacy PAC who served on its board until 1999.
Haithco received the Bowl of Hygeia Award in 1970. He received his Bachelor
of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Michigan in 1952. He also
holds a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Pharmacology from Michigan State
University. He currently resides in Fayetteville, Georgia.
The MPA, serving over 3,500 pharmacy professionals, strives to be a leader in
professional and scientific advancement by following its mission of encouraging
and supporting its members as the professionals responsible for the delivery
of patient-oriented pharmaceutical care.
