Detroit pharmacist
Ronald S. Coleman will receive the coveted Bowl of Hygeia Award during the 2003
Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) Annual Convention & Exposition Feb.
21-23 at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Mich.
The Bowl of Hygeia derives its name from the Greek goddess, Hygeia, who was
the guardian over the healing potion contained in the bowl. The Bowl of Hygeia
Award, presented in cooperation with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, is given to a pharmacist
who has made outstanding professional contributions and has participated in
community or governmental activities that reflect well on the pharmacy profession.
Coleman has been actively involved as a member of the Detroit Renaissance Lions
Club since 1979. He has served as president of the club, and vice-chair of its
Visually Impaired Youth Camp. He also served as cabinet secretary and treasurer
for the Wayne and Monroe County Lions Club Districts. He implemented several
health clinic pharmacies in the Detroit area, and instituted pharmaceutical
services for the uninsured in Detroit through a partnership with several area
health systems.
Coleman received his Master's of Public Health in 1995 from the University of
Michigan after completing his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, at Wayne State
University in 1968. He is currently the Health Pharmacy Administrator for the
Detroit Department of Public Health.
Coleman served as a member of the MPA's Michigan Society of Health-system Pharmacists
Public Affairs Committee, and is currently a member of the American Society
of Consultant Pharmacists and the Wayne County Pharmacists Association.
The MPA, serving more than 3,500 pharmacy professionals, strives to be a leader
in professional and scientific advancement by following its mission of encouraging
and supporting its members as the professionals responsible for the delivery
of patient-oriented pharmaceutical care.
