In an effort to make every day tobacco free, more than 130 pharmacies in Michigan have joined the Michigan Pharmacists Association’s campaign to rid their stores of all tobacco products. That number is more than double that of five years ago when MPA knew of 62 Tobacco-Free pharmacies.
MPA launched its Tobacco-Free Pharmacy Campaign in August 1993 with Lederle laboratories, the Michigan Department of Health and the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians.
The campaign is designed to decrease the availability of tobacco and tobacco-related products in Michigan pharmacies and to provide additional resources to assist pharmacists in becoming more effective tobacco-cessation counselors for their patients.
The campaign has five levels of participation ranging from the provision of tobacco cessation support, information and counseling to the complete removal of all tobacco products from the store.
While it may not be possible for every pharmacy in Michigan to be 100 percent Tobacco Free, every pharmacy can get involved in MPA’s Tobacco Free Pharmacy campaign on some level.
Level 1:
Provide tobacco cessation support, counseling, information and
referrals to patients
Level 2:
Decrease the open availability of tobacco and tobacco-related products
Level 3:
Remove tobacco product advertising from the pharmacy
Level 4:
Designate the pharmacy as a tobacco-free zone
Level 5:
Become a Tobacco-Free Pharmacy
