Fraud, Waste and Abuse: An Update for Providers

***All individuals employed by the pharmacy who have any interaction with a Part D beneficiary must receive fraud, waste and abuse mandatory training (pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, cashiers, drivers etc. Training must be completed yearly and can be completed in the calendar year to meet the requirement (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31).

Objectives
At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • understand the fraud, waste and abuse training requirements for pharmacy providers in Medicare Part D.
  • describe what pharmacy training should address to meet the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements.
  • identify the penalties for violations of fraud, waste and abuse.
  • provide pharmacy providers with common examples of fraud, waste and abuse.

Continuing Education
This program has been approved for 1.3 hours of continuing education credit for pharmacists. Individuals wishing to receive continuing education credit must register and pay for the program. Pharmacy continuing education credit (PCE) will be earned based upon completion of the program evaluation and posttest. Participants must complete the evaluation and posttest. The posttest must be passed with a score of 70 percent or greater. Upon successful completion of the program, 1.3 hours of credit will be awarded. Statements of credit will be mailed within four weeks after completion of the program.

Objectives

  • discuss the accreditation requirements for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) providers in the Medicare program.
  • identify which organizations have been approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the DMEPOS accreditation process.
  • explain the surety bond requirement for DMEPOS suppliers and how this impacts pharmacies that provide DMEPOS supplies and services.

Objectives
Pain management is important for ongoing pain control, especially if patients suffer with long-term or chronic pain. In today’s economy, many patients can’t afford health insurance and will turn to their pharmacist for recommendations on how to effectively manage their pain. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians need to be well versed on various management options.

At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to describe the difference between acute and persistent pain, discuss the physiology and pathophysiology of pain, and explain the principles of proper pharmacologic treatment of acute, persistent and cancer pain.

Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) is now offering all of its members and the entirety of Michigan Pharmacists Association a valuable online educational resource, HealthSystemCE.org.

HealthSystemCE.org is a new e-learning center designed to meet the educational and practice needs of health-system pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. This educational program is available at no additional cost to the membership.

HealthSystemCE.org provides:

  • topics that range from clinical practice, therapeutic and JCAHO related topics, pharmaceutical care, pharmacy management and subject matter relevant to hospitals, health-systems and home care pharmacy.
