Special Exhibit Hall hours for student pharmacists
The Exhibit Hall will be open from noon-2 p.m.; however, students are encouraged to visit the Exhibit Hall during these special hours to receive personalized attention from exhibitors.

4:30-5:50 p.m.
Opening Session: Better Than Facebook - Up Close and Personal with the Gubernatorial Candidates (Ambassador Ballrooms 2-3, Level 3)
Meet some of the candidates running for Michigan’s Governor and hear their views on issues, specifically education, health care and business. At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to discuss how the candidates will address the economic conditions in Michigan; discuss the intentions of the candidates on how they plan to improve the business climate in the state; describe the candidates views on state and national health care reform; and repeat the candidates views on the value of pharmacy and pharmacy professionals for the care of the citizens of Michigan.

MPA Student Social (Ambassador Ballroom 1, Level 3)
Student pharmacists and Adopt-A-Student participants are invited to the MPA Student Social. Attendees will have a chance to network with students from all three Michigan colleges of pharmacy. This year, students are encouraged to support their school by wearing their school colors.

Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship - Round One
Up to three teams of three will compete head-to-head, with winners from each Michigan college of pharmacy moving on to a final round of questions, similar to how the game show Jeopardy is played. The winning college will receive a traveling trophy to exhibit at their college of pharmacy for the year.

The schedule for the competition is as follows:

  • FSU: Saturday, Feb. 27, 7:30-8:50 a.m., Nicolet Room A&B
  • U-M: Saturday, Feb. 27, 7:30-8:50 a.m., Richard Room A&B
  • WSU: Saturday, Feb. 27, 7:30-8:50 a.m., Joliet Room A&B

9-10:20 a.m.
Keynote Session: Personalized Electronic Health Records

(Ambassador Ballrooms 2-3, Level 3)
At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to determine the major components that make up the electronic health record; discuss the role of pharmacy as a profession in participatory health care; determine at least three connectivity opportunities that can be immediately adopted in their practice; and evaluate the positive benefits associated with advocacy of personal health records for all parties concerned.

Smart Financial Decisions Today for the Pharmacists of Tomorrow
(Nicolet A-B, Level 5)
The financial game is changing in front of our eyes and it is becoming more challenging than ever. Now is the time to learn how you can play the game better in the midst of a major housing market slump, a volatile stock market, a major credit and lending crisis, rising unemployment and health care reform. This may sound scary, but it could be an unbelievable opportunity for those who will learn and implement the five strategies that you will learn during this presentation.

Join your classmates and future colleagues on Saturday, Feb. 27, from noon until 1:20 p.m. at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center for a luncheon sponsored by Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists. This is a ticketed event, and requires pre-registration, so mark this event on your convention registration. Onsite registrations for this luncheon will be not be accepted.

Student Pharmacist Self-care Championship - Round Two

(Ambassador Ballrooms 2-3, Level 3)

Competing Teams to be Announced
At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to identify and explain aspects of the effective and safe practice of pharmacy self-care treatments; analyze the usage and effectiveness of over-the-counter medications; and classify different groups of over-the-counter medications based on drug treatment class.

2010 Pharmacy Law Review (Nicolet A-B, Level 5)
Continuing education credit will not be awarded for this program.
This program was created to assist student pharmacists in preparing for the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination. Participants will receive either a book, “Michigan Pharmacy Law: A Guide to the Statutes and Regulations,” or the Pharmacy Law Update Service (PLUS) CD. Invitation only. Pre-registration is necessary. Presentation limited to student pharmacists only.

2010 Pharmacy Legislative and Regulatory Trends
(Ambassador Ballroom 1, Level 3)
At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to discuss proposed state and federal legislation; discuss the impact of the Board of Pharmacy rule changes on the practice of pharmacy; explain how legislation may impact the profession; and discuss the role of the pharmacist to assure that patient care is enhanced. (This program meets pharmacy law requirements for certified pharmacy technicians.) Statements of credit will be awarded independently from the Annual Convention.
