Internship Hours for All Pharmacists

To apply for licensure, all must complete an internship of 1,000 hours.

This internship can be earned in the following ways:

1. 1,000 hours under the supervision of a Michigan approved pharmacist preceptor

2. Completion of a board-approved, structured practical experience program within the college or school of pharmacy curriculum

3. Through a combination of 1 and 2

4. Hours earned in another state must be reported by the Board of Pharmacy where the intern hours were obtained

Activities that can be counted in the documentation of 1,000 hours of experience:

1. Experience verified by a Michigan approved pharmacy preceptor

2. Up to 400 hours of unconventional education experience verified by a pharmacy preceptor, other approved licensed pharmacist, or licensing agency (activities such as working in a research laboratory or a pharmaceutical lab could be considered unconventional activities.)

3. Experience obtained through practice as an intern in another jurisdiction if experience was comparable to standards set forth in rules (Verification must be submitted by school or licensing agency.)

4. Experience as licensed pharmacist in another jurisdiction as the equivalent of internship experience. (Verification must be submitted by licensing agency. (One thousand hours is equivalent to 25 weeks of experience, which is six months and one week at 40 hours per week)

Calculating hours of internship

1. Maximum of 40 hours of internship experience per calendar week

2. Maximum of 16 hours of non-college sponsored internship experience per week if intern is a full time student in a college or school of pharmacy, except during authorized vacation periods

Canadian Licensees

Part of the application process for Canadian licensees would include verification of 1,000 hours of internship which can be documented as listed in the acceptable activities #1-4. The licensee's provincial offices can document the years of licensure which could satisfy the internship requirement as described in Activity #4.
