APhA’s Pharmacy-based Immunization Delivery certificate training program is based on national educational standards for immunization training from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This practice-based curriculum represents a fusion of science and clinical pharmacy. The program, which emphasizes a health care team approach, seeks to foster the implementation of interventions that will promote disease prevention and public health. The purpose of this certificate training program is to prepare pharmacists with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to provide immunization services to patients across the life span.
NOTE: This program is intended for pharmacists and student pharmacists only. Pharmacy technicians interested in an immunization program should click here.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
In an effort to keep participants and trainers safe during the current health crisis, the certificate program has been restructured. This program includes several components, including self-study written material and recordings, live review via a web conferencing platform and injection technique assessment. NOTE: It is mandatory to participate in and complete all components.
Self-Study
The self-study learning activity is designed to ensure that all participants have an understanding of vaccine-preventable diseases and the role of pharmacists as vaccine advocates and administrators. There are five learning modules that present in-depth information on immunology, practice implementation, and legal and regulatory issues with appropriate references to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention resource publication, Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Disease.
Additional details about accessing the self-study will be emailed to you after your registration has been processed.
Recorded Sessions
After completion of the home study, participants will review recordings on the following: clinical review, managing a pharmacy-based immunization program, strategies for increasing immunization rates, applying ACIP immunization schedules, communicating with patients, and proper vaccination techniques.
Review Webinar
On May 19, 2021, from 9-11 a.m., a two-hour live webinar will be held to review content covered in the written material and recorded sessions and go over cases.
Injection Technique Assessment
Participants must demonstrate (live) proper intramuscular and subcutaneous injections into an individual while being observed by a pharmacist immunizer who has successfully completed the APhA Pharmacy-based Immunization Delivery program. Participants will be responsible for finding a volunteer to be injected and the certified pharmacist immunizer (cannot be the same person), as well as obtaining the following supplies required for the assessment. Please note, the participant must utilize at least two types of safety needles for their injection demonstrations. The certified pharmacist immunizer will be required to sign an injection technique assessment form attesting to proper injection technique.
