Local Organization Name: Wayne County Pharmacists Association (WCPA)
County Represented: Wayne County
Contact: Dan Lobb, president, WaynePharmacists@gmail.com
What activities does your local organize and conduct?
WCPA organizes continuing education programs, participates in community health fairs and has representation on community groups that address the opioid crisis. WCPA hosts a Feather Bowling social event during National Pharmacy month and also hosts Putt-Putt for PAC: The Al Tendler Invitational to raise awareness and funds for Pharmacy PAC. WCPA has organized several meet and greet receptions with legislators from our area to discuss topics relevant to the profession. WCPA also has a long and rich history of introducing resolutions annually at the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) House of Delegates.
What is an example of an innovative event or initiative that your local has recently been engaged in, and how did it have a positive impact?
Earlier this year, WCPA hosted a continuing education event discussing the opioid crisis and, specifically, demonstrating the various naloxone products that are available to practitioners. This event was conducted in collaboration with the Wayne County Health Department, which helped in spreading awareness beyond WCPA’s typical contacts. Students from Wayne State University’s Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences were recruited to welcome participants; this, in turn, helped drive awareness of WCPA to pharmacy students. This program was an expansion of a similar October 2017 program that was presented to students at the University of Michigan and practitioners from the Washtenaw County area in the hopes of revitalizing professional involvement within that area.
How would someone get involved in your local if they were interested? How could they express interest in serving on your Board of Directors?
WCPA has a social media presence on Facebook, “Wayne County Pharmacists Association.” Students and practitioners are encouraged to “like” the page to receive news about upcoming WCPA events. Messages may be left on the page for follow-up by WCPA Executive Board members. WCPA meets on the third Tuesday of each month, excluding December; meeting information is posted to the WCPA page prior to each meeting. All meetings are open to all members and interested professionals. Additionally, WCPA membership has its own email presence, WaynePharmacists@gmail.com to reach out with any interest in belonging to the Executive Board.
What is one thing that you would like student pharmacists and pharmacy professionals who are not involved in their local to know?
WCPA has a proud history of activity within the professional circles. We have been fortunate to have many members go on to further participate in a variety of professional areas, including the MPA Executive Board. We would love to have you join us and take part in making YOUR voice heard about the future of your profession!
