Due to new information provided by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), MPA would like to correct some information that had previously been disseminated regarding the license renewal dates of newly-licensed pharmacy technicians. In previous communication with LARA, the Department had indicated that newly-licensed pharmacy technicians would have a renewal date on their initial license of June 30, 2016. This information has since been clarified, and the 2016 renewal date will not be on licenses issued until later this spring. All pharmacy technician licenses that are currently being issued will have a June 30, 2015, renewal date. Beginning approximately 120 days before the renewal date (March 1, 2015), the Department will begin to update its systems and all subsequent licenses issued after the update is complete will be renewable on June 30, 2016.

Despite a higher initial upfront cost (specifically, having to pay licensing fees twice within the calendar year), there are still advantages for technicians to apply for their license before the renewal date rollover. The foremost advantage is that the Department has indicated that renewals will receive a higher priority during the June licensing rush than new applications. Applicants who delay applying for licensure have a chance of not being licensed by the June 30, 2015, effective date and will legally not be allowed to continue to practice until their application is processed. MPA and LARA encourage those who are able to apply for licensure immediately to do so in the most timely fashion possible. This will allow for smoother processing of the applications and minimize delays in the licensure process.
