Darnell Jones of Redford will be honored as the Community Pharmacist of the Year at the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) Annual Convention & Exposition, Feb. 27-March 1 at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.

This award, presented by the Michigan Society of Community Pharmacists (MSCP), recognizes a pharmacist who has displayed professional excellence and exemplary service to community pharmacy practice in advancing public health.

The MSCP Board is acknowledging Darnell not only for his outstanding community pharmacy practice and teaching contributions, but also because of his community outreach over the years.

Darnell received his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy in 1984. For 17 years, he practiced as a pharmacy supervisor, manager and staff pharmacist for Walgreens. He then spent 12 years as a pharmacy team leader for CVS, serving as an immunization trainer, community outreach participant and preceptor to Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences student pharmacists. In addition, while practicing at CVS, he was a two-time winner of the CVS Caremark Paragon Award, a recipient of the Community Outreach Award for region 41 and a recipient of the Values in Action Breakthrough Achievement Award for charitable work.

After serving one year as the clinical project leader for CET Pharmacy Group from 2013-2014, Darnell transitioned to his current position as a pharmacy team leader for Rite Aid. In recent years, he has worked to establish a pharmacist-centered model of holistic transgender care. This model focuses on eliminating the roadblocks in place against current flow of care, addressing the total client social and medical needs in order to increase overall patient health, directly addressing the health disparities for the transgender community outlined in the Healthy People 2020 goal and building a sustainable and replicating model for further expansion.

Darnell is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Affirmations, a nonprofit organization in the metro Detroit area that serves people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. He was honored by the organization with the 2014 Affirmations Ally of the Year Award. In addition, he is president of the Gender Identity Network Board, a volunteer for Trans Hormone Counseling at Affirmations and an informal pharmacist consultant for various organizations.

The Michigan Society of Community Pharmacists (MSCP) is a practice section of Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA), representing community, independent, chain and outpatient pharmacists in Michigan. MSCP cooperates to advance public health, patient care and the interests of the pharmacy profession. MPA advances the profession of pharmacy and patient care on behalf of the 9,000 pharmacists and 15,000 pharmacy technicians in the state.
