This year, Poison Prevention Week will be observed March 15-21, and we hope that you’re planning to use this opportunity to educate patients on the dangers of poison. More than two million poisonings are reported each year to the 55 Poison Control Centers (PCCs) across the country and at least 90 percent of these poisonings occur in the home. The purpose of National Poison Prevention Week, the third week in March each year, is to highlight the dangers of poisonings and educate the public about how to prevent them. There is so much you can do to make your patients aware of the risks and dangers of poisons.
MPA has a variety of resources available to members online in the Patient Education Library under ‘Using Medications.’ Local associations can also access materials on the Local Resources page under ‘Planning Events.’
In addition, the Poison Prevention Week Council has a variety of resources available on their Web site that pharmacy professionals can utilize in educating their patients on poison prevention.
