Pharmaceutical Waste Regulations Webinar

Last year, the EPA issued proposed pharmaceutical waste regulations to stop healthcare providers from disposing of hazardous waste down the drain. This free webinar, presented by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., will focus on the current and proposed regulations for disposing of pharmaceutical waste as well as advice regarding how to create less waste throughout the healthcare industries. Topics being covered include, but are not limited to: human health implications, preferred disposal options, environmental regulations and minimizing waste in the healthcare settings. This webinar is designed to benefit both healthcare providers and pharmacies including dentists, veterinarians, hospitals, surgical clinics, coroner’s offices, compounding/retail/long-term care and mail order pharmacies as well as adult care facilities. Presenting the webinar will be Christine Grossman, compliance assistance specialist with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Office of Environmental Assistance, and Catherine Zimmer, president of Zimmer Environmental Improvement LLC of St. Paul, Minn. Apply Today for Funding through the MPF Grant Program

The Michigan Pharmacy Foundation (MPF) is now accepting grant proposals for 2017. Every year, MPF accepts grant applications from individual pharmacy professionals, including student pharmacists and residents, pharmacy organizations, colleges of pharmacy and pharmacy businesses who desire to obtain funding for a project that promotes the mission of MPF.

MPF provides grant funding for projects that support its mission to advance pharmacy leadership, education and research and to promote pharmacy practice to the highest level of patient care. For more than 20 years, the Foundation has awarded in excess of $250,000 in grant funding for projects that advance the profession.

Programs seeking grant funding for programming on the following topics are preferred:
  • Pain Management
  • Substance Abuse and Addiction
  • Public Health Management

MPF grant applications are due Oct. 1 each year. Applications can be e-mailed to Eric Roath, MPF executive director, at Eric@MichiganPharmacists.org; or mailed to Michigan Pharmacy Foundation, Attn: Eric Roath, 408 Kalamazoo Plaza, Lansing, MI 48933. If your application is mailed, you must provide three copies. Please note that faxed applications will not be accepted. For 2016, MPF has allocated up to a total of $11,000 in funding to be awarded for grant proposals. If multiple grant applications are accepted, the $11,000 will be divided among all grantees. Attend the MPF Oktoberfest Event on Saturday, Oct. 15

Celebrate Oktoberfest at this private fundraising event on Oct. 15, 2016, in the Centennial Room at Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids. The evening’s activities will include the opportunity to sample Founders’ unique assortment of critically acclaimed craft beer while enjoying dinner with friends and networking with colleagues.

Proceeds from the event will go toward supporting the Foundation’s investments in the future of pharmacy. MPF provides scholarships to student pharmacists, supports practitioners through the year-long Leadership Academy, supplies grant funding for projects that advance pharmacy practice and health outcomes and reaches out to the community through initiatives that work to help the citizens of Michigan. MPF $2,500 Scholarships to Michigan Student Pharmacists - Applications Being Accepted Now

Every year, the Michigan Pharmacy Foundation (MPF) awards a $2,500 scholarship to one student pharmacist at each of Michigan’s three colleges of pharmacy. Applications can be submitted any time before the Oct. 15 deadline.

To be considered for this competitive scholarship, a student pharmacist must:
  • Have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average
  • Have completed their first year of an accredited Pharm.D. program
  • Be a full-time P2 or P3 student pharmacist when applying
  • Be a current member of Student Michigan Pharmacists Association (SMPA, verified by MPA staff)
  • Submit a mandatory essay on the topic or focus determined annually. Essay should be no longer than two double-spaced pages, formatted in 12-point, Times New Roman font with one-inch margins
  • Submit a college transcript (an unofficial transcript is acceptable)
  • Submit a CV or resume
  • Arrange for two letters of recommendation to be submitted directly to MPF. Recommenders can e-mail their letter to Eric@MichiganPharmacists.org; fax to (517) 484-4893; or mail to Michigan Pharmacy Foundation, Attn: Eric Roath, 408 Kalamazoo Plaza, Lansing, MI 48933.
    • One professional recommendation letter related to educational or pharmacy experience
    • One personal recommendation letter unrelated to pharmacy but addresses the character of the applicant (please note: letters from family members will not be accepted)
