Legislative Events

Throughout the year, MPA and Michigan Pharmacy PAC organize several events to encourage pharmacy professionals to interact with elected officials, become educated about important practice issues, stay up-to-date on the latest laws and regulations, and network with others in their profession.

Below is a list of our annual legislative events.

Pharmacy PAC Luncheon (February)

The Michigan Pharmacy Political Action Council Luncheon occurs each year during the MPA Annual Convention & Exposition on Friday afternoon typically the last weekend in February. Each year, elected officials and Association members are selected to be honored with awards for their support of the profession and good public health, including the Legislator of the Year, Good Public Health Policy and Hank Fuhs Good Government Awards (see the Awards page for more details). The luncheon provides an opportunity for legislators, contributors and others to gather and reflect on the previous year’s activities and successes.

Legislative Priorities of the Michigan Legislature (February)

This continuing education session occurs during the MPA Annual Convention & Exposition on Friday morning typically the last weekend in February. The program provides an opportunity for pharmacy professionals to hear the opinions, concerns and comments of elected officials on issues that are relevant to pharmacy and the health care field. Insights provided at the event will allow you to stay current on the priorities of the Michigan Legislature directly from an array of elected officials.

Pharmacy Law and Policy Symposium (April)

This continuing education event occurs in April each year, attracting nearly 175 pharmacy professionals. The MPA Pharmacy Law and Policy Symposium is intended to provide pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and student pharmacists with important legislative and regulatory updates that impact their profession. In the past, presentations have included Drug Enforcement Administration drug trends and diversion efforts, legislative priorities in Michigan, administrative rules and Michigan Medicaid priorities. Participants are also given the opportunity to meet with legislators following the conclusion of the event to discuss important pharmacy issues while they’re in Lansing.

Pharmacy Day at the Capitol (September)

This event occurs in September each year on the south Capitol lawn in Lansing. Pharmacy Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity for pharmacists and student pharmacists to educate legislators on their value as health care professionals. Volunteers are given unique one-on-one time with Michigan’s elected officials to provide wellness demonstrations, including blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose monitoring, immunizations, emergency preparedness and healthy lifestyle practices. In addition, participants have a chance to utilize talking points to discuss key pharmacy issues with lawmakers. This event is held in conjunction with Michigan Pharmacists Association’s Medication Disposal Event @ the Capitol, which provides a venue for the public to safely dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications and showcases the value of pharmacists in keeping patients and communities safe. There are also sponsorship opportunities available for this event.

  • The 2021 event will occur on Tuesday, Sept. 28 on the south lawn of the Michigan State Capitol building in Lansing.

Campaign School (October / every other year)

This event occurs in October every other year (odd numbered years). Hosted by MPA and Pharmacy PAC, Campaign School’s comprehensive agenda focuses on educating individuals interested in running for public office. The course provides information about the campaign process, including finance law and financing a campaign, utilizing social networking and media, Secretary of State requirements, campaign strategies, what your family can expect, and the time and commitment required to succeed in this process.
