Program Description

In 2020, the United States, and most of the world, encountered first-hand the devastating effects of a pandemic. There’s no greater evidence of the value of immunizations in preventing disease and mortality. Pharmacy technicians play a vital role in aiding the pharmacist and the patient in the delivery of health care. While health care has historically focused on treating disease, our best weapon as healthcare professionals is the prevention of disease. Increasing the availability of pharmacy-based immunization services has become critical in the area of disease prevention especially to those patients who are most vulnerable. Pharmacy technicians can play a critical role to increase the accessibility of vaccine administration services. By working synergistically through team collaboration, the pharmacist and pharmacy technician can increase the capacity to immunize patients resulting in decreased healthcare costs. This four-part program consisting of required readings, video-recorded lectures, a virtual live seminar and an observed demonstration of immunization technique has been specifically designed for pharmacy technicians to provide them with a foundation of knowledge on existing vaccines and will provide pharmacy technicians with the skills training to administer immunizations.

Upon completion of these parts of the program, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe the role of pharmacy technicians in supporting immunizations
2. Define key terms in the immunization process
3. List common vaccines and vaccination schedules including COVID-19 Vaccine
4. Identify the techniques required to prepare a vaccine for administration
5. Describe the procedures for vaccine administration and safety considerations
6. Identify procedures for immunization-related documentation
7. List procedures for receiving, storing and handling vaccines
8. Describe methods for managing vaccine-related adverse reactions and emergency situations

Self-Study (Parts 1 and 2) Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of these parts of the program, the participant will be able to:

1. List the most common vaccines administered in pharmacies and summarize their associated vaccination schedule.
2. Describe and demonstrate the techniques required to prepare a vaccine for administration.
3. Demonstrate successful subcutaneous injection technique.
4. Demonstrate successful intramuscular injection technique.
5. Describe procedures for managing an adverse reaction to an immunization.

Teaching Format

This program consists of four parts including a home study and live components. The home study component consists of Part 1: a collection of resource documents and self-study reading materials and Part 2:an online video-recorded PowerPoint lecture. The live component consists of Part 3: an interactive overview lecture including a question and answer session and Part 4: a practice demonstration exercise proctored and evaluated by a certified pharmacist immunizer who has successfully completed the American Pharmacists Association Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate Training Program and is an experienced immunizer.  Each participant must complete all four parts of the program, correctly answer at least 70% of each set of self-assessment questions, demonstrate successful injection techniques to a proctor, submit all required documentation, as well as earn both the home study and live PCE credit to have successfully completed this training program. Please note: MPA recommends pharmacy technicians obtain their CPR certificate before they begin administering immunizations however CPR training is not included in this course.

Webinar Dates and Participant Minimum

Participants will be required to participate in one (1) live webinar on an available day of their choice. Webinars, delivered through Zoom, are currently available on the following day: April 18, 2023.

MPA reserves the right to cancel any webinar with less than 10 participants at least five days prior to the webinar date. Those registrants that selected a date that is cancelled will be notified and moved to the next upcoming webinar.

PCE Credit Statement

The self-study component of this activity is structured to meet knowledge-based educational needs in which the activity acquires actual knowledge. The live component of this activity is structured to meet application-based educational needs. An application-based activity is structured to meet application-based educational needs and applies to information learned in the time-frame allotted. Information in application-type activities is based on evidence as accepted in the literature by the healthcare professions. Participants must complete an online activity evaluation and posttests in Lecture Panda before to receive credit. Participants must pass posttest questions with a score of 70 percent or greater. If all requirements are met, participants will receive pharmacy continuing education (PCE) credit through CPE Monitor.

Michigan Pharmacists Association is an accredited provider of pharmacy continuing education credit.

Process to Claim Continuing Education Credit

Lecture Panda will allow participants to easily complete the program evaluation and posttests online. To earn pharmacy continuing education credit, register on the Lecture Panda website for this event by providing your name, e-mail address, NABP E-profile identification number (aka CPE Monitor number) and date of birth (MMDD format). To do so, click here to be directed to the event page on the Lecture Panda website. Upon registering on Lecture Panda, you will receive an email confirming registration with a link to complete credit requirements. This link allows you access the program evaluation and posttests. To avoid emails going to your spam folder, be sure to set up your email account to allow emails from Lecture Panda.

When claiming credit in Lecture Panda, you will be required to enter a “claim code” unique to this program. A unique claim code will be provided for the home study portion, as well as the live portion of this program. The claim code for the home study will be provided at the end of Part 2. The live claim code will be announced at the end of live portion. Be sure to pay attention at the end of the live portion to receive the program claim code. The program claim code will not be provided once the program has concluded.

You should claim credit in Lecture Panda within two weeks of completing the activity.Periodic emails from Lecture Panda to complete the requirements will be sent.

Eligibility Requirements for Earning Your Advanced CPhT (CPhT-Adv)

Be recognized for your important contributions in the workplace by completing the below PTCB certificate programs. Active PTCB CPhTs who have completed at least four of the certificate programs (including TPV and/or medication history), or three certificate programs and the Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) Certification, and three years of work experience will be eligible to earn a CPhT-Adv as early as mid-2020.

• Technician Product Verification (Tech-Check-Tech): Assess ability to complete state or facility validation process and verify products for dispensing.
• Medication History and Medication Reconciliation: Assess familiarity with the patient medication interview process, documentation, and patient factors required for taking accurate and complete medication histories.
• Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention: Assess skills to mitigate risks of controlled substance loss due to diversion through analysis and practical strategies.
• Billing and Reimbursement: Assess understanding of complex processes and systems that will maximize the business health of pharmacies via third-party billing and reimbursements.
• Hazardous Drug Management: Assess ability to minimize exposure risks for facility personnel and patients and ensure facility compliance through hazardous drug management.

Additional Information

The statement of credit from your CPE Monitor record serves as proof of completion.
