The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is expanding its credentialing programs by adding five assessment-based certificate programs for advanced technician roles and an advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) credential. As a nationally-recognized leader in the development of technician training resources, the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) has developed a customized training program to help prepare pharmacy technicians for the new PCTB certificate focused on medication history and medication reconciliation.

Eligibility Requirements for Earning Your Advanced CPhT (CPhT-Adv)

Be recognized for your important contributions in the workplace by completing the below PTCB certificate programs. Active PTCB CPhTs who have completed at least four of the certificate programs (including TPV and/or medication history), or three certificate programs and the Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) Certification, and three years of work experience will be eligible to earn a CPhT-Adv as early as mid-2020.

  • Technician Product Verification (Tech-Check-Tech): Assess ability to complete state or facility validation process and verify products for dispensing.
  • Medication History and Medication Reconciliation: Assess familiarity with the patient medication interview process, documentation, and patient factors required for taking accurate and complete medication histories.
  • Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention: Assess skills to mitigate risks of controlled substance loss due to diversion through analysis and practical strategies.
  • Billing and Reimbursement: Assess understanding of complex processes and systems that will maximize the business health of pharmacies via third-party billing and reimbursements.
  • Hazardous Drug Management: Assess ability to minimize exposure risks for facility personnel and patients and ensure facility compliance through hazardous drug management.

Program Description

Often times patients are on many medications, both prescription and non-prescription, and frequently unaware of the therapeutic effects, potential adverse reactions and drug-related interactions. Pharmacy technicians play a vital role in aiding the pharmacist and the patient navigate through the medication process that can be very complex and confusing.  One of the many opportunities for a pharmacy technician to assist the patient and the pharmacist is in taking the medication history. This program designed specifically for pharmacy technicians will take them through the steps on how to initiate the medication history process, review and interview of the patient, and guide them through the steps to ensure that they are appropriately and legally obtaining the information to complete the medication history.  Additionally, it will help them understand the concepts of the medication reconciliation process and the value of medication synchronization. This program provides a foundation of the elements that comprise a Comprehensive Medication Review (CMR) and Medication Therapy Management Reviews (MTM).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define and explain the differences between the medication history and a comprehensive medication review.
  2. Define key terms in the medication history process.
  3. Determine patient friendly terminology versus medical terminology.
  4. List the common vaccines and explain the vaccination schedules.
  5. List and explain the drug related errors and the necessary steps to correct these errors.
  6. Review and explain the differences between sound- and look-alike medication labels.
  7. Identify the potential impact of sound and look alike medications.
  8. Define adherence, non-adherence and compliance and list factors that may impact the patient’s ability to adhere to dosing schedules.
  9. Identify techniques and devices that may assist the patient with medication reminders.
  10. Identify limitations that patient may have and list possible solutions (vision, literacy and mobility).
  11. Describe medication reconciliation (Med Rec) and the role of the pharmacy technician.
  12. Explain the differences between medication history and medication reconciliation.
  13. Describe medication synchronization (Med Sync).
  14. List advantages for medication synchronization for the patient.

Teaching Format

This program will employ several different teaching methods. This training is a faculty-lead, online PowerPoint lecture, with embedded assessment questions, case studies and a post-program completed medication history.

PCE Credit Statement

This activity is structured to meet application-based educational needs. An application-based activity is structured to meet application-based educational needs and applies to information learned in the time-frame allotted. Information in application-type activities is based on evidence as accepted in the literature by the healthcare professions. Participants must complete an online activity evaluation and posttests in Lecture Panda before to receive credit. Participants must pass posttest questions with a score of 70 percent or greater. If all requirements are met, participants will receive pharmacy continuing education (PCE) credit through CPE Monitor.

Process to Claim Continuing Education Credit

Lecture Panda will allow participants to easily complete the program evaluation and posttests online. To earn pharmacy continuing education credit, register on the Lecture Panda website for this event by providing your name, e-mail address, NABP E-profile identification number (aka CPE Monitor number) and date of birth (MMDD format). To do so, click here to be directed to the event page on the Lecture Panda website. Upon registering on Lecture Panda, you will receive an email confirming registration with a link to complete credit requirements. This link allows you access the program evaluation and posttests. To avoid emails going to your spam folder, be sure to set up your email account to allow emails from Lecture Panda.

When claiming credit in Lecture Panda, you will be required to enter a “claim code” unique to this program. Be sure to pay attention at the end of the program to receive the program claim code. The program claim code will not be provided once the program has concluded.
