    • One hour of Ethics and Jurisprudence is required for licensure for anyone who is renewing their license this year. The new Pharmacy General rules that went into effect in December 2020 state “(i) An applicant for license renewal shall complete at least 1 hour of the 30 required hours of continuing education in pharmacy ethics and jurisprudence”. This applies to renewals after Dec. 30, 2020.
  • Human Trafficking – A one-time course is required – Click here for a home study that was created for pharmacists and technicians to meet this requirement.

    • In December 2020, new pharmacy general rules went into effect. These rules state “(3) Pursuant to section 16148 of the code, MCL 333.16148, the requirements specified in subrule (1) of this rule apply for license renewals beginning Jan. 1, 2020, and for initial licenses issued after Nov. 13, 2022.” MPA has confirmed with the Bureau of Professional Licensing within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) that a pharmacist only needs to take a Human Trafficking CE once in order to qualify for this requirement.”
  • Implicit Bias Training – Beginning June 1, 2022, individuals seeking licensure and/or re-licensure must have completed a two-hour training in Implicit Bias that meets the standards in Administrative Rule 338.7004  prior to being issued a license.   • Controlled Substance Awareness – A one-time course is required – Click here for a home study that was created for pharmacists to meet this requirement. Healthcare professionals who are not practicing pharmacy may complete Michigan educational requirements by clicking here.

    • Individuals seeking a controlled substance license or who is licensed to prescribe or dispense controlled substances shall complete a one-time training in opioids and controlled substances awareness. This new requirement applies to controlled substance license renewals beginning with the first renewal cycle after the promulgation of this rule and for initial licenses issued after September 1, 2019. For example, licenses that expire on June 30, 2019, have until June 30, 2021, to complete this training.

In order to bill for medication therapy management (MTM) services for Medicaid beneficiaries, pharmacists must have successfully completed MTM program(s) approved by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education. State regulations mandate that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians cannot earn more than 12 hours of CPE credit in a 24-hour period of time.

NOTE: Hours Worked During Pandemic No Longer Count Toward CE Requirement

During the pandemic, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order 2020-82 allowed healthcare providers to count hours worked toward their live CE requirement. However, with the Michigan Supreme Court’s decision striking down all of the governor’s executive orders, any applicant who did not file for licensure/relicensure by Oct. 2, 2020, cannot count hours worked towards their live CE requirement and must obtain their hours through normal means.
